The ABC Advisory Council

Recommendations and Commendations 15-16 February 2001

Recommendations

ABC Online

Recommendation R1/1/01 — Director of New Media Services
The ABC Advisory Council congratulates ABC Online for providing quality broadcasting to both the Australian and International community. However, the Council would like to see the following improvements:

  • A 24 Hour updated news and Current Affairs Service
  • An archival search facility for current news stories
  • A search engine on the Messagestick page.

Drum Logo — Youth Logo

Recommendation R2/1/01 - Director of Radio, Director of Television, Director of Development and Director of New Media Services
In regard to recent recommendations from the ABC Advisory Council concerning a ‘youth logo’, Council recommends investigation of the use of the Triple J Drum Logo as a ‘youth logo’ across all ABC networks.

Howard Goodall’s Big Bangs

Recommendation R3/1/01 - Director of Enterprises
Council recommends that ABC Enterprises explore the possibility of making available the Big Bangs program on video.

Community Based Drama

Recommendation R4/1/01 - Director of Television and Director of Development
The ABC Advisory Council recommends that the ABC research the possibility of a community based drama to attract a family drama audience across all age groups, which would explore medical and social issues across all families for example, disability and indigenous.

By way of background, the previous success of GP was discussed and Council felt that the ABC could examine producing a contemporary program along similar lines exploring health and social issues of today.

Commendations

Landline

The ABC Advisory Council commends the new time-slot for Landline, particularly as this has been an ongoing issue with the Council for some time.

Stateline

The ABC Advisory Council commends the new time-slot for Stateline and the enhanced viewership this will garner. Also, the ABCAC member from the Northern Territory thought that perhaps this program could be better resourced in the Territory.

The National Broadcaster

The ABC Advisory Council commends this insightful and interesting publication and is appreciative of its circulation to members.

Heywire

The ABC Advisory Council commends this program which has been declared a great success in the way it brings to the attention of urban youth the confronting issues of young people living away from the capital cities.

Australian Story

The ABC Advisory Council commends this program, particularly the one hour episode on Sydney which dealt with one family’s adoption — and it is suggested that the ABC look to exporting some of the best editions to an overseas market as this would tell potential visitors to Australia what Australians are like and also what makes this country so unique.

Michael Brissenden

The ABC Advisory Council commends Michael Brissenden, reporter for ABC News and Current Affairs based in Brussels for his in depth reporting on ABC Radio in the region.

AM and PM

The ABC Advisory Council commends both AM and PM as these programs are greatly appreciated on radio, particularly by those living in remote and regional areas where access to daily newspapers is not possible.

The Council also asked if it was possible to access transcripts of these programs online?

The Media Report

The ABC Advisory Council commends this program, particularly the ‘Reconciliation in Review’ program which was broadcast on 14 December last year.

Mac Cocker — Night Train

The ABC Advisory Council commends Night Train presenter, Mac Cocker for his presentation of unique music featuring blues, funk, R&B which has been a great delight to ABC Radio listeners.

Centenary Of Federation Concert

The ABC Advisory Council commends the production and screening of this telecast and the quality achieved as apposed the earlier televising of the Federation parade and commentary which was not of a high standard.

Tony Delroy’s Night Life

The ABC Advisory Council commends the Night Life program presented by Tony Delroy. Some members were of the view that the program may have reached its own comfort zone and become a little complacent. Not too much change but don’t become too complacent.
