Something In The Air
Recommendation R1/1/00 - Hd National Networks
The opening titles and track for Something in the Air appear to be lengthy and repetitious. The ABC Advisory Council recommends the opening titles and track be reviewed and shortened to avoid unnecessary repetition.

Editorial Policies - Named Sporting Events
Recommendation R2/1/00 - Hd Local & Regional Services and Hd National Networks
In the context of the review of the editorial policies, the National Advisory Council recommends that the for the sake of clarity, the correct name for sponsored sporting events and trophies (for example: Ansett Cup, Cannon Challenge), be used even if this involves reference to a brand or company name. (The Council has been advised that this will be considered in the current review of Editorial Policies).

6.00 - 7.00pm Timeslot
Recommendation R3/1/00 - Hd National Networks
The issue of program provision for young teenage audiences has been the subject of several recommendations from the ABC Advisory Council in the past - (refer to Recommendations R3/2/99 Meeting of 26 & 27 July 1999 and R11/2/95 Meeting of 24 & 25 July 1995).
The ABC Advisory Council continues to feel concerned that there could be more programs aimed at this specific audience. In particular, the ABC Advisory Council is concerned that the Heartbreak High drama series, which was very popular with this audience, has been discontinued and the time-slot filled with a program that seems to be of limited interest to teenage viewers.
In a previous response to the ABC Advisory Council's recommendation it was stated that Something in the Air would have a "wide demographic appeal and appeal particularly to the younger audience". However, some members of the ABC Advisory Council have noted that there is not much interest in this program from young teenagers. The ABC Advisory Council would like to receive feedback on what the response from teenagers has been to the new programs in the 6-7pm timeslot, specifically has the teenage audience that enjoyed Heartbreak High decreased significantly and what plans are there for regular programs for this audience?

Indigenous Issues
Recommendation R4/1/00 - Hd News & Current Affairs and Hd National Networks and Hd Local & Regional Services
The ABC Advisory Council recommends program makers dealing with Indigenous issues, projecting a more positive image of Indigenous role models. This recommendation arises in part from results of the recent Newspoll survey which suggests that audiences of News and Current Affairs programs believe there is too great a coverage of Aboriginal affairs and the Council wonders if such reaction is caused by a stream of news reports on negative aspects of Aboriginal issues.

Enterprises - FM Product
Recommendation R5/1/00 - GM Enterprises
The ABC Advisory Council recommends that ABC Enterprises consider a range of merchandise for Classic FM listeners. It is the National Advisory Council's belief that ABC Classic FM listeners would be interested in purchasing a range of goods similar to those available for Triple J listeners.

Animated Series
Recommendation R6/1/00 - Hd National Networks
The ABC Advisory Council recommends broadcast of a wider range of animated series for children and the youth audience. It is the Council's opinion that a series with an on-going plot and adventure/fantasy themes are under-represented in the current mix. Due to the tremendous continuing support for previously screened series such as Mysterious Cities of Gold and Astro Boy, thanks to a lively internet following, and we believe these productions would be well received. Further, we would welcome information on any new ABC plans for an animated series in this model.

National Press Club Luncheons
Recommendation R7/1/00 - GM Marketing and Hd National Networks
We at the ABC Advisory Council acknowledge the perceived difficulties in repeating the National Press Club Luncheons in a late night time slot. Nevertheless we feel it does contribute to local content, especially for regional Australia. Furthermore, wider advertisement of the upcoming speakers would enhance program enjoyment as would increased promotion

ABC Advisory Council Conference
Recommendation R10/1/00 - Executive Officer to the Board

Commendations
702 Karratha
The ABC Advisory Council commends the staff of 702 Karratha for the professional manner conducted during the broadcast in December 1999, when cyclone 'John' bared down upon this region.
While presenting the approaching danger in a manner to create concern in the effected community, they did not at any time over-dramatise the situation. The fact that people in Perth could also tune in and hear the proceedings was comforting for those who had family living in the effected region. The close community feel that the Karratha station pervade on-air provided a sense of security. Overall well done.

Its willingness to probe and criticise the ABC itself serves to enhance the public's faith in the integrity of MediaWatch and the ABC itself.
2000 Today
The ABC Advisory Council commends the ABC initiative to broadcast and assist with the production and screening of 2000 Today. The diverse and comprehensive selection of millennium celebrations broadcast were both enjoyable and educational. The extensive coverage of the events over the day's broadcast allowed greater opportunity to be informed and enlightened to the cultural diversity and respective traditions of our global community.
