The ABC Advisory Council

Recommendations and Commendations 4 — 5 DECEMBER 2007

Recommendations

ABC NOW — R1/3/07 — Managing Director

The ABC Advisory Council, in recognising the need for widespread access to the ABC's extensive online content and the ABC's educational role, recommends that the ABC approach the Federal Government to propose that ABC NOW is provided as an installed item on every laptop for school students as part of the Federal Government's recently announced education initiatives.

Commendations

Federal Election 2007 — Online Coverage

The ABC Advisory Council commends the ABC's online coverage of the 2007 Federal election and in particular Antony Green's comprehensive and authoritative Election Guide.

Wednesday Evening Comedy Line-up

The ABC Advisory Council commends ABC's Television Wednesday evening comedy line-up and in particular the way in which it has reached the youth audience through The Chaser's War on Everything and Summer Heights High.

The Sounds Of AUS — John Clarke

The ABC Advisory Council commends John Clarke and The Sounds of Aus for a humorous and informative approach to this key part of our national identity and for reflecting such a large section of the Australian population in the program.

Landline

The ABC Advisory Council commends Landline for its success in connecting regional and urban audiences and in raising awareness of issues in the Australian agricultural sector.  A recent story reflects the broad appeal of the program.  The story ‘Ethical eating debate heats up’ explored consumer awareness of:

  • environmental sustainability
  • food miles
  • responsible labelling
  • ethical approaches to primary production.

This very topical story provided new insights into Australia’s domestic food market and represented a high standard of research and presentation.
