Recommendations

A Big Country Revisited

Recommendation R1/3/03 - Director of Television
The Advisory Council commends A Big Country Revisited - a superb program building on what the ABC does best. A further series would be most welcome


Trauma - Life and Death in the ER

Recommendation R2/3/03 - Director of Development
The Advisory Council welcomes the screening of this program in an earlier timeslot. While acknowledging budget priorities Council would like to see the ABC examine the possibility of an Australian version of such a program


Nation Press Club

Recommendation R3/3/03 - Director of Television
The Advisory Council would like to see a re-examination of the possibility of presenting a repeat of the National Press Club luncheon in an evening timeslot. Council would also like to see further attention given to advance publicity regarding speakers.


Online News Archive

Recommendation R4/3/03 - Director of New Media
The Advisory Council requests further attention be given to providing a link to the news features archive both on the front page and newspage.


Landline Weather Forecast

Recommendation R5/3/03 - Director of News and Current Affairs
The Advisory Council has received requests for the inclusion of the seven-day weather forecast in Landline. Could this be provided along with the other information?


Wine and Food Program

Recommendation R6/3/03 - Director of Development
The Advisory Council has previously recommended the production of a wine and food program which examines the regions of Australia. While recognising the cost factors involved and the variety of cooking programs presently on television, Council recommends that the ABC look at the development of a series which would focus on people, history and produce of regions of Australia. This could involve production from regional areas of Australia.


Australian Writers

Recommendation R7/3/03 - Director of Development
Council recommends that the ABC look to developing a series focussing on Australian writers. This could be a series of short segments which would focus on poetry or prose with imagery to match. Perhaps this could look at collaboration with a filmmaker or visual artist with writers reading their own works.


Program on Environmental Sustainability

Recommendation R8/3/03 - Director of Development
The Advisory Council recommends that the ABC investigate the possibility of a series on Environmental Sustainability. Such a series of programs could look at environmental issues including water management, weather, building laws and could link into other ABC productions such as Landline, Gardening Australia, Earthbeat.


Great Institutions

Recommendation R9/3/03 - Director of Development
The Advisory Council recommends that the ABC look to producing a program on "Great Institutions" such a program would take a behind the scenes look at significant institutions, such as museums, galleries and libraries, and their stores.


Contemporary Music Program

Recommendation R10/3/03 - Director of Development
The Advisory Council recommends that the ABC look to developing a contemporary music program which would be family orientated and appeal to a broad range of audiences - not Video Hits or Rage - but rather a program in the groundbreaking tradition of 6 O'clock Rock and Countdown which would provide interviews and background and cover a wide range of Australian contemporary music.


Programs on Adolescence

Recommendation R11/3/03 - Director of Development
The Advisory Council would like to see a program on young people and adolescence which builds on the segments in George Negus Tonight and on local radio for example 702 Drive.


Forgotten Heroes

Recommendation R12/3/03 - Director of Development
Given the emphasis on winning and success Council recommends a program on "Forgotten Heroes" which would focus on people who "did not quite get there".


Contemporary Composers Television

Recommendation R13/3/03 - Director of Television and Director of Development
The Advisory Council would like to see segments on Australian Contemporary Composers in the Sunday Arts program.


Different Places

Recommendation R14/3/03 - Director of Development
The Advisory Council would be interested in seeing a series developed which looks at Australian families living in different circumstances and places.

Commendations

The Advisory Council made the following commendations:

ABC Canberra

The ABC Advisory Council applauds the ABC Canberra team on the innovation in design of the refurbished premises and the use of resources and staff in program making and particularly for the strong focus on community.


After the Fires

The Advisory Council commends the documentary, After the Fires. This program again shows the ABC's ability to go to the heart of areas of interest to the community.


Wildness

The Advisory Council would like to commend the program, Wildness featuring the two nature photographers.


The Big Picture - Platypus - World's Strangest Animal

The Advisory Council would like to commend The Big Picture program, Platypus - World's Strangest Animal.


Arts Coverage Radio National

The Advisory Council commends Comfort Zone as an integral part of Radio National's arts program. The Council also commends Radio National for covering Watabashi.


Background Briefing

The ABC Advisory Council commends Background Briefing for its well-presented research and analysis into current issues.


Marking Time

The Advisory Council commends Marking Time for its relevance to Australian audiences and use of Australian writers and performers.


Limelight

The Advisory Council commends the publication of Limelight. This is an excellent publication supporting the ABC's arts programming and providing stories and background which are not available from any other publication. Further the Council would like to commend Enterprises and Publishing for their commitment to excellence.


Northern Territory Presenters - Fred McKue and Charlie King

The Northern Territory member of the Advisory Council asked that Fred McKue and Charlie King be commended on their performance.


Philip Adams

The Advisory Council commends Philip Adams for consistently good programs.


Davis Cup Coverage

The Advisory Council commends the ABC for its coverage of the Davis Cup.


Coodabeen Champions

The Advisory Council commends the local radio program, Coodabeen Champions for consistently good entertainment.


Angela Catterns - 702 ABC Sydney

The Advisory Council commends Angela Catterns for her outstanding performance and broadcasting professionalism.
