Marian’s voice is well known to listeners across Australia from her 26 year long career in ABC Classic FM, where she has appeared in almost every time slot, including being the first regular weekday morning presenter. She thoroughly enjoys her Listener Requests programme, one of ABC Classic FM’s highest rating shows, which she has hosted for 17 years. She also regularly presents broadcasts of live music making, including those of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and has presented every SIPCA since 1992.
Music has been a lifelong passion for Marian. She grew up in country NSW and enjoyed a musical family life. "My sister and I sang our first Mendelssohn duet when we were three and four years old," she recalls.
Singing continued to be an interest for Marian and while at Sydney University she performed as a soloist in operatic productions, with small groups, and as a member of the Sydney Philharmonia Choir, where she sang in Beethoven's Choral Symphony at the opening of the Sydney Opera House. She spent several years in London studying singing and music criticism. On her return she joined ABC Classic FM.
Outside working hours and family life with her husband and son, Marian spends "every available moment" with her violin. She also enjoys Middle Eastern Dance, which gives her the opportunity to explore the music of other cultural traditions, "One way or another, I just can't imagine a day going by without music" she says.
