"Music is an adventure, for both its creators and its listeners. I'd like to think of 'Jazz Up Late' as a musical adventure - and like any adventure, it might range from the sublime to the hair-raising. I'll be exploring contemporary jazz at home and from around the world as well as looking at emerging trends and how the music of other cultures and genres are currently influencing jazz.
The A to Z of jazz fascinates me, no matter which period in its history it comes from...Louis Armstrong's clarion trumpet from the '20s still gives me goose bumps...and then there's the exhilarating rush that John Zorn's confronting and ferocious 'Painkiller' induces, with so much in between!
'Jazz Up Late' has been created to complement Mal Stanley's 'Jazztrack', to appeal to avid fans of the music and the 'jazz curious' alike and to explore the world of jazz beyond 'Jazztrack'.
It's been said that jazz is 'the sound of surprise', I'm certainly still finding it so...and I hope that you will too, on 'Jazz Up Late'."

This week we dip into the newly released set that compiles all the recordings made by the enigmatic Anthony Braxton for the Arista label during 1974 to 1980. The Jazz Tardis takes to a concert recorded at the Berlin Philharmonie in 1976 with Braxton’s quartet featuring trombonist George Lewis, double bassist Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul.
Saxophonist David Murray was in Australia recently with his Black Saint Quartet - and staying in Berlin we’ll hear a concert recording of theirs from November last year.
The new CD from Australia’s Antripodean Collective is also on the bill. This ensemble has a shifting line-up and its second CD "Funcall" features violinist John Rodgers, trumpeter Scott Tinkler, pianist Marc Hannaford and drummer Ken Edie.
Also included is a new CD from Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii and her trio, and more...
This week we’ll hear from a new recording that features a new trio led by the renowned Norwegian double bassist Arild Anderson with Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith and Italian drummer Paolo Vinaccia. The CD was recorded in concert last year at the Belleville in Oslo.
The Jazz Tardis takes us to America in the ‘60s and ‘70s and to some historic recordings from pianist Andrew Hill and saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. A previously unissued late 1969 session from Andrew Hill, released for the first time in 2003 as “Passing Ships”, features an outstanding band and is remarkable for his inventive compositions and arrangements – foreshadowing the music he gave us with his acclaimed big band on the 2002 recording ‘Beautiful Day’ which we heard from recently.
Roscoe Mitchell’s somewhat confrontational ‘Nonaah’ has at last made its way onto CD. The newly released double disc set features his solo sax statement at the 1975 Willisau Festival in Switzerland and a saxophone quartet of the piece recorded two years later, as well as a number of previously unissued performances. Tonight’s feature will be ‘Nonaah’ for four alto saxophones with Joseph Jarman, Wallace McMillan and Henry Threadgill.
Also in the mix: the new CD from Sydney’s The Alcohotlicks, a new CD from keyboardist Adrian Klumpes and his trio 3ofmillions, the debut CD from English drummer John Randall and another cut from ‘Miles From India’...
