Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) has one of the most individual voices of any 20th Century composer. His combination of bird song and Eastern music, his unique take on serialism combined with his deep Catholic faith and a soaring imagination makes for a heady musical experience. To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth Classic FM has programmed a number of concerts which touch on the breadth of his output. > more
December 11 is the 100th birthday of American composer emeritus Elliott Carter. Still producing vibrant, intelligent and stimulating music as he enters his 11th decade, Carter was mentored by composer Charles Ives and has known virtually all the major composers of the 20th century. His music can be challenging for the listener as he often works with multiple rhythms, dense textures and sound patterns that merge and break apart. But as with most worthwhile ventures, the effort of listening closely to Carter’s music provides plenty of rewards. > more
