Indian music is extraordinarily rich and diverse with multiple varieties of folk and popular music, and two mainstreams of classical music that are said to be the oldest unbroken musical tradition in the world. The exotic sounds of the sitar and the dazzling rhythms of Indian music have fascinated many westerners, and in the 1970s and 80s the enthusiasm of some high-profile rock, pop and jazz artists like George Harrison, John Coltrane and Miles Davis for Indian music sparked a surge of interest in the west. There’s been considerable cross-over activity between Indian and Western music ever since. This week’s selection includes santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, singer Amelia Cuni - and Ravi Shankar, who taught George Harrison the sitar in the 1960s.
