ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year is the country's largest choral competition. Between March and June, 7000 singers from more than 250 youth and adult choirs came together to hear each other sing in audition sessions held around the country.
The top 41 choirs were chosen to sing in six State Finals held during July and August. From these, judges selected the best three youth choirs and best three adult choirs to compete in the National Final in Sydney.
ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year will return in 2010. Registration for auditions will open in early 2009.
Last year's winner of ABC Classic FM's Choir of the Year, The Birralee Blokes from Brisbane, have been invited to attend The Third British International Male Voice Choral Festival in Truro Cornwall, UK 3 - 7 May 2007. They will be singing in an International Youth Gala Concert with other choirs from Estonia, The Czech Republic and the UK. ABC Classic FM wishes them every success for their international debut.
Staged at City Recital Hall, Angel Place, Sydney on Saturday 30 September, the culmination of Australia's largest choral competition was broadcast live around the country on ABC Classic FM and around the globe via our website.
Hosts Damien Beaumont and Mairi Nicolson introduced the final six choirs who travelled from QLD, WA, SA, VIC and NSW to compete for the title ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year:
