WHAT'S ON AT POPCORN TAXI?
WATCH THE FILMS. MEET THE MAKERS. Founded in 1999 by independent filmmakers Gary Doust and Matt Wheeldon, Popcorn Taxi is a regular in-depth film event where filmmakers and enthusiasts can meet, watch films of all types, and discuss the filmmaking process.
What makes Popcorn Taxi unique is the focus on the filmmakers' craft and careers, rather than tabloid-like gossip. The moderator/interviewers (often filmmakers themselves), aim in most sessions to explore why the filmmakers made the choices they did, and how they brought their visions to the screen. The guests are usually Producers, Directors, Actors, Writers, Editors, Cinematographers, Visual Effects Supervisors, Designers and Composers.

FESTIVAL OF JEWISH CINEMA
5-23 NOVEMBER - MELBOURNE 6-23 NOVEMBER - SYDNEY
The 19th annual Festival of Jewish Cinema will showcase the best of Jewish cinema, including 16 Australian premieres, from 5-23 November, 2008 at Melbourne’s Australian Centre for the Moving Image and from 6-23 November, 2008 at Sydney’s GU Bondi Junction Cinemas.
Festival highlights include two films by of world renowned filmmaker Amos Gitai; DISENGAGEMENT - a powerful drama starring Juliette Binoche as Ana, a French woman who after the death of her father is compelled to return to Israel to search for the child she gave up twenty years earlier. Eventually arriving in Israel with her brother Uli during the period of the Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip, Ana comes face to face with the county’s present reality as she struggles to re-engage with her own personal history. Also included is Gitai’s most recent film ONE DAY YOU'LL UNDERSTAND which follows the story of Victor, a successful Parisian businessman, who is spurred on by current events, to try to put together the missing pieces of his family history by travelling to a French village where his grandparents and mother used to live, in the hope of finding some answers.
Festival favourite Amos Kollek’s latest offering, RESTLESS, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and is an edgy psychological drama that explores the underbelly of contemporary Israeli identity. Also screening at the festival is a special presentation of the mini-series, A TOUCH AWAY, which takes a slice of contemporary Tel Aviv life and spins a marvellous multi-family drama that will leave audiences glued to their seats and wanting to see more. This wonderful series, produced for primetime television in Israel, broke ratings records when broadcast there.
Based on a true story, THE CLOWN AND THE FUHRER tells the story of Charlie Rivel – then Europe’s most famous circus performer – who was dragooned into entertaining the Nazi élite during WW1, including the Fuhrer himself. It is almost too difficult to think of Nazi concentration camps as a place where love could blossom, but the inspirational documentary by Academy Award-nominee Michèle Ohayon, STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME, shows how the power of love and the ability of humankind can rise above unimaginable suffering.

HOLA MEXICAN FILM FESTIVAL NOVEMBER & DECEMBER NATIONAL
The Hola Mexican Film Festival, in its third year this year, will bring a total of 15 fascinating feature films plus a program of shorts to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra throughout November and December. Several films will recieve their Australian premieres and all films screen in glorious 35mm with English subtitles.
Highlights include:
LADRONES VIEJOS las leyendas del Artegio, (THE OLD THIEVES)- a documentary about a generation of real-life thieves who were famous in 1960s Mexico for their exploits and the wild success they enjoyed in the process. While telling the story of the legendary El Carrizos and other famous outlaws of the time, director Everardo González paints a chilling yet humorous portrait of the Mexican criminal underworld: the delinquents who thrived in the city and, more alarming, their close connections to the authorities who allowed them to continue their business. The thieves recount their story from prison, recalling both the glorified era in which they were virtually unstoppable and the price they eventually had to pay. Nominated for two Ariels, Mexico’s national awards, for best picture and director.
DEFICIT - the directorial debut by actor Gael Garcia Bernal, which is a study of the class system in Mexico centered on a rowdy house party. Cristobal (García Bernal) is a privileged rich boy who loves a good party. Cristobal has made plans for a barbecue at his parents' weekend home, but his younger sister (Camila Sodi) and her friends will be staying at the house that weekend as well. Likewise, gardener Adán (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) has known Cristobal since the two were just children, yet despite being the same age the two old friends have now been drawn into the same system of class consciousness that divides the entire country. While Cristobal has also invited his girlfriend Mafer (Ana Serradilla) to the highly anticipated shindig, a chance meeting with Argentine beauty Dolores (Luz Cipriota) prompts the deceitful lothario to purposefully give Mafer bad directions in order to get better acquainted with the lovely new object of his affections. LA ZONA - by director Rodrigo Pla. One of the most awarded films of this festival describes one of the biggest real dramas of Mexico. In Mexico, the gap between rich and poor has created a separation both geographically and culturally. In this highly awarded film, Rodrigo Plá tells the story of a fenced-in Mexico City community that is broken in by burglars during one stormy night. After one of the burglars is trapped, the people from La Zona “make justice” on their own terms. Plá weaves plot points to bring together the characters in a shattering final test of the connection between two unlikely allies.
SANGRE DE MI SANGRE - by director Christophe Zalla. Winner of the Best Film at the Sundance Film Festival, SANGRE DE MI SANGRE is an exhilarating and provocative thriller from newcomer Christopher Zalla exposing the dark side of the American dream. A young Mexican immigrant, Pedro (Jorge Adrian Espindola), journeys to New York City in search of the successful father he’s never met only to have his belongings and identity stolen by a conniving thief, Juan (Armando Hernandez). As Pedro is left alone and unable to communicate in a country foreign to him, Juan cons his way into the home of Pedro’s father, Diego (Jesus Ochoa), finding a man just as flawed as he is. While Juan attempts to reinvent himself, Pedro's only hope lies with a mysteriously complex prostitute, Magda (Paola Mendoza), as he frantically searches for his identity back.
